In the fast-paced and constantly evolving world of accounting, ethical decision-making is a fundamental pillar of the profession. On February 27, 2025, Colorado Mesa University (CMU) hosted "Let’s Talk About Ethics", an engaging event designed to bridge the gap between students and CPAs, while reinforcing key ethical principles in the accounting profession. This dynamic event provided students with a unique opportunity to engage directly with seasoned professionals, fostering valuable learning experiences, networking, and mentorship.

Student Engagement: The Heart of the Event

What set this event apart from traditional ethics training was its emphasis on active participation and collaboration. "Let’s Talk About Ethics" encouraged an open, hands-on approach where students were not only passive listeners but also active participants. CPAs and faculty led attendees through case studies, discussing complex ethical scenarios, sharing insights on industry standards, and facilitating thought-provoking conversations.

Rather than a one-way presentation, the event promoted audience participation, allowing students to ask questions, reflect on their views, and discuss the ethical implications of various situations. The open dialogue helped students understand how to navigate ethical decisions in the workplace and emphasized the importance of integrity in their future careers.

Mentorship: Bridging the Gap Between Students and Professionals

Another key element of the event was the opportunity for students to connect with experienced CPAs and faculty, bridging the gap between academia and the professional world. This mentorship provided students with valuable insights into the ethical challenges they will likely face in their careers and how to approach them with confidence. Professionals shared personal stories, discussed industry best practices, and offered guidance on how students can maintain strong ethical standards as they transition from the classroom to the workplace.

Ethical Leadership: A Shared Responsibility

As the profession continues to evolve, the commitment to maintaining high ethical standards remains essential. Through open discussions and case studies, "Let’s Talk About Ethics" highlighted the shared responsibility between students, faculty, and CPAs in upholding these standards. The collaborative nature of the event fostered a culture of accountability and integrity that is crucial for the future of the profession.
