The Future of Accounting: Why It’s Time to Recognize CPAs as STEM Professionals

Accounting has evolved far beyond spreadsheets and ledgers. Today’s CPAs leverage cutting-edge technology, data analytics, and automation to provide strategic insights, detect fraud, and drive business success. But if you ask a high school student what accounting looks like, they might picture something far less innovative.
This outdated perception is part of the reason why fewer students are pursuing accounting degrees. It’s also a barrier to attracting a diverse pipeline of future CPAs. That’s why COCPA, in partnership with the AICPA, is actively advocating for federal recognition of accounting as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field.
Bipartisan legislation—the Accounting STEM Pursuit Act (H.R. 3541) and the STEM Education in Accounting Act (S. 1705)—aims to unlock federal funding for K-12 accounting education, particularly in underserved communities. These bills would allow grant funding to support high-quality accounting education, reinforcing the profession’s critical role in today’s tech-driven economy.
Why STEM?
Accounting has always incorporated STEM skills—think mathematics, database management, statistics, and risk assessment—but today’s CPAs are expected to master even more. Professionals now work with AI, machine learning, blockchain, and data analytics to enhance decision-making, ensure financial security, and drive innovation.
Additionally, the CPA Exam has evolved to reflect these technological demands, integrating IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, and data-driven decision-making throughout its content. Recognizing accounting as a STEM field would better align public perception with the profession’s reality.
A Stronger, More Diverse Pipeline
Expanding access to accounting education is critical for building a diverse profession that reflects the communities it serves. Research shows that approximately 40% of accounting graduates come from racial or ethnic minority backgrounds, but more work is needed to attract students from underrepresented groups.
Many K-12 students—especially in underserved areas—lack exposure to accounting as a career path. By classifying accounting as STEM, these bills would provide federal support to integrate accounting education into STEM curricula, encouraging more students to consider it as a viable career option.
The Future of Accounting
Accounting firms and businesses are increasingly prioritizing tech-savvy CPAs who can navigate a rapidly evolving digital landscape. Skills like data analytics, financial modeling, automation, and AI integration are in high demand, and firms are actively developing proprietary technologies to enhance reporting and fraud detection.
The Accounting STEM Pursuit Act and the STEM Education in Accounting Act send a clear message: accounting is a technology-driven profession, and it should be recognized as such.
COCPA is proud to support this initiative alongside the AICPA and other national and state CPA organizations. Together, we’re working to secure the future of the profession, ensure its continued relevance in an increasingly tech-centric world, and strengthen the CPA pipeline for generations to come.
