Important Update: Positive Changes to Colorado CPA Licensure Requirements Now in Effect

We are pleased to announce that the changes to Colorado CPA licensure requirements, previously highlighted in our blog "COCPA Advocacy Yields Positive Changes to Colorado CPA Licensure Requirements to Ease Pipeline Challenges", are now officially in effect as of December 15, 2024. These changes, the result of dedicated COCPA advocacy efforts, are designed to address CPA pipeline challenges while preserving the high standards of integrity and rigor that define the profession.

Key Updates

  • Internship Hour Allowances: Candidates may now apply up to three (3) semester hours of internship toward the required each of the 33 accounting and 27 business administration credits. Additionally, these internship hours can be counted as qualifying work experience toward the 1,800 hours required for licensure. This update facilitates the integration of academic learning with practical professional experience.
  • Reduction of Audit Coursework Requirement: The former six-credit auditing coursework requirement has been reduced to three credits focused on U.S. GAAS. This adjustment aligns Colorado's standards with those of other states, simplifying the licensure process for candidates educated in different states.
  • Removal of Mandatory Ethics Coursework: The requirement for a three-credit accounting or business-specific ethics course has been eliminated. Nonetheless, ethical competency remains a fundamental expectation for CPAs. Ethics will continue to be integrated into academic curricula, and these courses may still be applied toward the total accounting and business credit requirements.

Why This Matters

These updates reflect COCPA’s ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of CPAs by:

  • Enhancing Flexibility: Providing greater options for meeting educational and work experience requirements.
  • Promoting Practical Experience: Encouraging earlier exposure to real-world accounting practices.
  • Reducing Barriers: Streamlining the licensure process to mitigate unnecessary obstacles for candidates.
