Navigating Networking: A Guide for Young Professionals

If the mere mention of networking sends chills down your spine, you’re not alone. In recent months, COCPA representatives have visited firms across the state to meet with interns and new staff to talk about member benefits, the CPA licensure process, and the value of the CPA designation. During these sessions, many participants have described networking as "exhausting," "awkward," "uncomfortable," and even "terrifying."

It's completely normal to feel this way, especially when you’re just starting your career. But let’s take a moment to unpack those feelings and explore why building a professional network is not just important – it’s essential.

Why Networking Matters

First, let’s talk about the “why.” Being able to successfully network and cultivate those relationships can be your professional super power. A strong professional network can open doors that you never knew existed. It can lead to job opportunities, mentorships, collaborations, and even lifelong friendships. In today's fast-paced job market, who you know can be just as important as what you know. Plus, networking allows you to gain insights from others in your field, helping you to stay informed and inspired.

Addressing Your Concerns

Here are some strategies to address the top concerns that come to mind when considering the prospect of networking with other professionals:

  • Exhausting: Yes, networking can feel draining. But think of it as an investment in your future. Try to set small, manageable goals for each event – like meeting three new people – rather than feeling pressured to work the entire room.
  • Awkward: We’ve all been there! The truth is, many people feel the same way. A good icebreaker can ease the tension. Consider starting conversations with genuine compliments or questions about the other person's work. You’ll find that most people appreciate the opportunity to share their experiences.
  • Uncomfortable: Feeling out of place is common, but remember, everyone is there for the same reason: to connect and grow. Try to find a buddy – someone from your organization or a fellow attendee – to navigate events together. This can help alleviate some of that discomfort.
  • Terrifying: Stepping out of your comfort zone is intimidating, but it’s where growth happens. Remind yourself that every professional was once in your shoes. Approach networking with curiosity rather than fear, and focus on learning rather than trying to impress.

The COCPA: Your Networking Toolkit

The COCPA offers a wealth of networking opportunities designed to help you build your professional circle in a supportive environment.

1. Social Events

Throughout the year, we host a variety of engaging social networking events designed to bring our members together in fun and relaxed settings. One of our most popular series is the Summer of Fun, featuring four exciting networking opportunities during the warmer months. This past summer, members had a blast at events like a Colorado Rockies game, a delightful wine tasting, an energetic TopGolf outing, and a delicious beer and food pairing experience. These events not only provide a chance to unwind and enjoy great activities, but they also foster connections that can last well beyond the summer.

2. Professional Member Groups

Join one of our professional member groups, tailored to your professional sector or area of interest. Whether you’re looking to help plan an event, participate in community service projects, or otherwise share your expertise in support of the accounting profession, these groups offer a supportive platform to connect with peers while fostering an environment for idea sharing and collaboration. Engaging in discussions and attending group events can feel less intimidating than larger networking gatherings, as you’ll be surrounded by individuals who share your goals and experiences.

A fantastic starting point is our Emerging Professionals Initiatives Committee (EPIC). For more information on EPIC, reach out to Abbey Aguirre

To learn more about other engagement opportunities, contact Stacy Svendsen or visit the “Get Involved" page on cocpa.org. We’d love to help you plug in!

3. Connect: The COCPA Online Community

Don’t forget about our online platform, Connect. This is your virtual haven for networking. Engage in discussions, share articles, and seek advice from your COCPA colleagues. It’s a great way to start building relationships without the pressure of face-to-face interactions. Plus, you can network to the extent that you wish.

Final Thoughts

Networking doesn’t have to be a daunting experience; it can be an exciting opportunity for growth, learning, and connection. Remember, everyone is navigating his or her own networking journey, and by participating in our events and online community, you’re taking the first step toward building a supportive professional network.

So, the next time you feel that knot in your stomach at the thought of networking, try to reframe it as an adventure waiting to happen. Embrace the journey, and watch your network – and your confidence – grow.

Happy networking!
