Inspiring Future Accountants: COCPA Engages High School Students at the Colorado FBLA State Leadership Conference

On April 2, I attended the Colorado Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State Leadership Conference as a representative of the COCPA. It proved to be an exciting day that was filled with opportunities to inspire high school students who could represent the next generation of accounting majors at colleges and universities across the country. Amidst the competitive, high-energy atmosphere, it was evident that these bright and enthusiastic students are eager to explore the full range of post-secondary opportunities that await them.

Among the primary objectives of my participation was to engage with high school students and shed light on the many diverse and rewarding career paths within the accounting profession. From forensic accounting to management consultancy, I emphasized in my conversations with these promising students the versatility and prominence of accounting in various industries. Through interactive discussions and real-life examples, I aimed to ignite curiosity about and interest in the accounting profession among the student competitors.

Additionally, this event provided an excellent platform to showcase how the COCPA supports students who are pursuing accounting education. I highlighted the plethora of resources, scholarships, and networking opportunities available through the Society, all geared toward assisting students and young professionals in their academic and professional journeys.

Whether it's access to study materials, mentorship programs, or guidance on navigating the CPA exam, the COCPA is committed to empowering the next generation of accounting professionals. This event was an opportunity to share this with students and educators alike.

In addition to interacting with students, I seized the opportunity to connect with educators and discuss potential partnerships to further promote accounting education in high school classrooms. Our conversations emphasized the importance of exposing students to accounting concepts early on, and I emphasized the COCPA’s eagerness to collaborate with educators by providing guest presentations and supplementary learning materials. By fostering strong relationships with educators, the COCPA aims to enrich accounting education and equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to excel in the profession.

Overall, my experience at the FBLA State Leadership Conference was incredibly rewarding. Not only did I have the privilege of inspiring and supporting the next generation of accounting professionals, I hope that this early-stage engagement instills a passion for accounting and empowers students to pursue fulfilling careers in the profession.

The COCPA remains dedicated to nurturing talent and fostering a vibrant community of accounting professionals, and we look forward to continuing our efforts to positively shape the profession’s future.
