Diego Baca, CPA, will complete his term as COCPA Board Chair on April 30 before transitioning into the role of immediate past chair. In his final Chair Column, featured in the spring 2024 issue of NewsAccount, Baca reflects on the state of the profession and the role that members can play in moving the accounting profession forward.
Baca counts among the highlights of the past year meeting members from across the state, whether they worked in Big Four firms, small firms, education, industry, or government, and hearing their stories.
“I was reminded that despite our diverse backgrounds, we share the same passion for the profession,” he says. “I learned so many lessons, and I thank you for helping me to become a leader with a higher awareness of the many different issues that we all face.”
On a broader scale, Baca, who is senior manager with EY in Denver, reflects, “Listening to longtime CPAs discuss what the designation has meant to them and how that meaning hasn’t changed over the years affirms my view that this profession is special.”
He challenges members to boost their COCPA involvement and be intentional about using their voices amidst the significant challenges and opportunities facing the profession. “I ask each of you to find one simple way to get more involved with the COCPA this year,” he says. “Whether it’s joining a committee; speaking on a technical topic; helping young, aspiring accountants navigate their own path; or just popping into the office to hang out, we need your influence now more than ever.”
The COCPA thanks Baca for tirelessly sharing his enthusiastic vision and insights throughout his term, and looks forward to welcoming Toby Clary, CPA, partner, Soukup, Bush & Associates, P.C., Fort Collins, to the role on May 1.
