State Board to Consider Rule Changes in Response to Letter from Gelinas

At the January 2024 Colorado State Board of Accountancy meeting, the State Board considered several adjustments to simplify Colorado CPA licensing rules in response to the November 2023 letter from COCPA President and CEO Alicia Gelinas, CPA.

In the coming months, the State Board will consider the following rule changes, which if approved, would move through the Colorado rule-making process:

  • Elimination of the minimum of three hours of accounting or business ethics coursework
  • Elimination of the additional three hours of advanced auditing coursework (total of six hours required currently)
  • Eligibility of community college credit hours not transferred to a bachelor degree-granting institution
  • Allowing dual-credit for academic internships to meet both the education and experience hours requirements

In Colorado, the rulemaking process involves four stages: 1) notice of proposed rulemaking; 2) comment period on proposed rule; 3) hearing on proposed rule; and 4) final adoption of proposed rule.
