FYI CPA Exam Test Takers: What's Changing in the CPA Exam Interface

Heads up, future CPAs: the CPA Exam is switching to a new testing platform in July 2027, and that means a short testing blackout and slower score releases for about a year. If you plan to sit for any section in mid-2027, read on before you book.

What's changing

The AICPA is replacing the software that runs the exam at Prometric test centers. Candidates will see an updated interface, and the AICPA says the new platform brings:

  • Better accessibility features
  • A faster, improved processing cycle
  • A more modern exam experience overall
  • Easier updates as testing technology evolves

The exam content itself isn't the headline here. The change is to how you interact with it: navigation, layout and accessibility tools.

Key dates

DateWhat happens
July 1–11, 2027No testing. The AICPA wraps up the prior window, retires the old system and deploys the new one.
July 12, 2027Testing restarts on the new platform.
July 2027 – about July 2028Score releases follow an adjusted schedule for 12 months after launch.

These are current target dates, so they could shift.

Why scores will be slower: even small interface tweaks can change how questions perform statistically. The AICPA needs real response data from the new platform to recalibrate items before it can release accurate, fair scores, and that takes time.

What to do now

  • Plan around July 1–11, 2027. Don't count on a test date in that window.
  • Build in extra wait time for scores. If you test after launch, expect results to take longer than usual, especially if you're racing a credit-expiration deadline.
  • Get familiar with the new interface once the AICPA releases practice materials, so layout changes don't cost you time on exam day.
  • Watch for updates. The AICPA says more details are on the way, including the revised score release schedule.
