SB26-076, Expanding Pathways to CPA Licensure, Passes Colorado Legislature, Now on the Road to the Governor’s Desk
The Colorado General Assembly has passed SB26-076, marking a major step forward in modernizing CPA licensure in Colorado. With Monday's House vote, the bill has now cleared both chambers and heads to Governor Jared Polis for signature.
What Happened

The Colorado House of Representatives passed SB26-076 with strong bipartisan support, giving the bill final legislative approval. The bill previously passed the Senate unanimously, reflecting broad agreement on the need to address workforce challenges in the accounting profession.
What This Means
SB26-076 introduces multiple pathways to CPA licensure, expanding flexibility for candidates while preserving the standards that define the profession.
It also updates interstate practice provisions, helping ensure Colorado remains aligned with other states and supports mobility for licensed CPAs.
Together, these changes are designed to strengthen the CPA pipeline, support firms facing capacity constraints, and create more accessible pathways into the profession.
Why This Matters
Across Colorado, firms are navigating increasing demand for services alongside ongoing workforce shortages. Expanding pathways to licensure helps address these pressures while maintaining the rigor and trust associated with the CPA credential.
For students and emerging professionals, this creates more attainable and flexible routes into the profession. For employers, it supports long-term workforce sustainability and growth. Broadly, it is a significant achievement for the future of the accounting profession here in Colorado. '
"The strong 'yes' vote from legislators sends a clear message: our profession is trusted, essential, and deeply valued in supporting our businesses, taxpayers, and governments. Colorado's commitment to workforce development is extending to our profession, and passage of this bill reinforces what we've long known—accounting is a dynamic, impactful career path with meaningful opportunities for students," COCPA President & CEO Alicia Gelinas noted.

This legislation reflects years of collaboration among COCPA, legislators, and stakeholders to position Colorado for the future of the profession. A special thank you is owed to the COCPA Licensure Modernization Task Force, whose dedicated work and advocacy made this milestone possible.
What's Next
The bill now heads to Governor Polis for signature. If signed, the updated licensure pathways will take effect on January 1, 2027.
As Gelinas noted, "The COCPA is proud to serve as the premier resource representing Colorado CPAs as part of a broader national movement. As we eagerly await the Governor's signature, we remain focused on laying the groundwork for successful implementation ahead, but today, we pause to celebrate this major achievement."
The Colorado State Board of Accountancy will begin the rulemaking process to establish implementation details. COCPA will continue to monitor progress and provide updates to help members understand what changes mean and how to prepare.
