Women’s Equality Day: Moving from Opportunity to Advancement

Each August, Women's Equality Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on progress, recognize the contributions of women, and recommit to creating workplaces where talent can grow, lead, and thrive.

For COCPA and the broader accounting profession, this recognition is more than a moment on the calendar — it's a reminder that equality isn't only about access to opportunity, but about what happens after. Are women being considered for stretch assignments, leadership roles, client-facing work, and decision-making spaces? Are workplace cultures helping them advance in meaningful, sustainable ways?

Representation matters, but it's only one part of the work. True inclusion means women have the visibility, sponsorship, feedback, flexibility, and support needed to move forward in their careers — not just an initial seat at the table.

COCPA's annual Women's Summit is one resource built for exactly this kind of advancement, bringing together professional women from across the accounting profession for practical strategies, networking, and honest conversations about the challenges and opportunities shaping their careers. The 2026 Women's Summit will be held on Friday, August 28th. Learn more here.

Building Equitable Leadership Pathways

In accounting and finance, leadership pathways are shaped by many factors: technical expertise, client relationships, mentoring, business development experience, and access to influential networks. When access to those opportunities is uneven, advancement can become uneven as well. A commitment to equity asks organizations to examine how career-building opportunities are assigned and whether all professionals have a fair chance to demonstrate their potential.

One important step is to make advancement expectations clear. Employees should understand what skills, experiences, and milestones are needed to move into leadership roles. Transparency helps reduce uncertainty and ensures that career growth is not dependent on informal conversations or unspoken rules.

Another key factor is sponsorship. Mentorship provides guidance, but sponsorship goes a step further. Sponsors advocate for professionals when they are not in the room. They recommend them for important projects, introduce them to decision-makers, and help open doors to leadership opportunities. For women pursuing advancement, sponsorship can be a powerful tool for visibility and growth.

Organizations can also support equity by reviewing how work is distributed. High-profile projects, client presentations, committee roles, and strategic initiatives often become stepping stones to leadership. Leaders can ask: Who is being invited to take on these opportunities? Who is gaining exposure to senior leaders or clients? Who may be ready for the next challenge but has not yet been asked?

Flexibility is another important part of advancement. Career growth should not require professionals to choose between leadership and personal responsibilities. Workplaces that support flexibility, wellbeing, and sustainable performance are better positioned to retain talented professionals and help them continue progressing throughout different stages of life and career.

Celebrating Women Who Lead

Women’s Equality Day is also an opportunity to recognize the women who are already leading, mentoring, innovating, and shaping the future of the CPA profession. Their leadership strengthens firms, organizations, communities, and the profession as a whole. Celebrating these contributions helps create visibility and reminds emerging professionals that leadership is possible and valued.

Each year, COCPA honors this kind of leadership through the Women to Watch Awards, at the CPAs Make a Difference Celebration, recognizing both Emerging Leaders and Leaders of Note. We hope you'll join us at the annual gala on August 27th to celebrate these women. Read more about this year's winners here.

A Call to Action

As we recognize Women’s Equality Day on August 26, COCPA encourages members, firms, and organizations to consider one practical action they can take to support equitable advancement. That action might be identifying emerging women leaders, reviewing promotion criteria, creating sponsorship opportunities, inviting more voices into decision-making conversations, or simply asking team members what support they need to take the next step.

Progress is built through intentional choices. When organizations move from offering opportunity to actively supporting advancement, they create stronger teams, more inclusive workplaces, and a more resilient profession.

Women’s Equality Day reminds us that equality is not a finished goal. It is an ongoing commitment — one that calls us to recognize talent, remove barriers, and build leadership pathways where all professionals have the opportunity to succeed.
