CPA-PAC Election Impact: A Look at Our Influence and the Road Ahead

As we reflect on the results of the November 2024 election for the Colorado General Assembly, one truth is clear: those who prepare today will succeed tomorrow. The decisions made by elected officials in the coming years will shape the future of the CPA profession in Colorado. Now is not the time to sit back—it’s the time to take action and strengthen our collective voice by contributing to the CPA-PAC.

The CPA-PAC is a non-partisan force that pools voluntary contributions to support candidates who champion issues vital to the accounting profession. These strategic investments help address challenges ranging from CPA licensure and tax administration to small business regulations and workforce development.

A Case Study in Impact: Scott Bright, SD 13

This year, the CPA-PAC proudly supported Scott Bright, a first-time candidate for Senate District 13 in Northern Colorado. With an accounting degree and first hand experience taking the CPA exam, Scott brings invaluable insight into our profession’s challenges. His decisive 13-point victory signals that candidates who share our priorities can and do win. Scott’s presence in the legislature ensures that the voice of CPAs is heard, especially on complex financial and regulatory issues.

Election Results: Strategic Progress

The CPA-PAC supported 12 candidates in this election cycle, achieving a success rate of over 83% with 10 candidates elected and 2 falling short. This outcome highlights the impact of strategic preparation and investment.

Here are the CPA-PAC-supported candidates who were elected:

  • Marc Snyder
  • Cleave Simpson
  • Scott Bright
  • Marc Catlin
  • Rebekah Stewart
  • Dan Woog
  • Katie Stewart
  • Lindsay Gilchrist
  • Gretchen Rydin
  • Rebecca Keltie

Lessons from Tough Losses

While we celebrated key wins, we also faced challenges. For instance, Robyn Carnes, our supported candidate in Senate District 16, ran a strong campaign against an incumbent. Though unsuccessful, her candidacy highlighted the need for continued preparation and advocacy to address future challenges.

Hear from a Fellow CPA

I am in full support of the work being done by the CPA-PAC. It is critical to have the voices of CPAs represented at the state capitol … As we look for ways to increase the CPA pipeline and add accounting to the STEM designation, we need to partner with representatives across the state from both political parties.”
