This intermediate-level course provides a focused review of complex and frequently misunderstood federal tax forms encountered in business and individual tax compliance. Participants will examine selected forms that present heightened technical complexity, increased documentation requirements, or significant penalty exposure. Emphasis is placed on reporting mechanics, computational challenges, and common compliance errors. Practical examples illustrate areas of IRS scrutiny and reinforce strategies to improve accuracy and consistency in return preparation and review.
1. Identify key reporting requirements for selected complex federal tax forms
2. Analyze common computational and disclosure challenges associated with these forms
3. Apply reporting rules to fact patterns involving multi-entity or multi-jurisdictional considerations
4. Determine documentation requirements and penalty exposure risks
5. Identify common preparation errors and compliance weaknesses
• Overview of complex federal tax reporting requirements
• Review of selected difficult forms (may include forms such as 4797, 6252, 8582, 8606, 8995/8995-A, or other high-risk compliance forms)
• Computational challenges and interaction with related schedules
• Disclosure requirements and supporting documentation considerations
• Penalty provisions and IRS examination focus areas
• Common preparation errors and quality control considerations
Working knowledge of federal income taxation and experience preparing or reviewing individual or business tax returns.
